“So sorry, Adam, I swear.” I claw at his chest, trying to push away while he keeps laughing. When I finally sit up, flushed and sweaty, I realize I’m straddling a total stranger.
“Don’t go dying on me, Rosie. I’m not ready to let you go yet. We’ve only just met.”
and I cling to Adam as he squeezes me for a moment that ends too soon. He gives Piglet’s chin a scratch, and with one last look in my direction, he winks at me. “See ya around, trouble.”
My problem is they want more. I want more, too, but the more I want is genuine. The more they want is dollar signs.
“Your daddy thinks he’s all that and a bag of potato chips, Bear, doesn’t he?”
“Oh, yeah, I could do that. I’m really good at eating dinner.” Her jaw drops, and she claps both hands over her mouth. “Oh my gosh. I’m really good at eating dinner. Did I just say that out loud? I did, didn’t I?”
“Yeah.” I grin. “It’s a date.”
“Hidden…identity…” She underlines it three times. “I love this trope.”
“Well, maybe that means something,” Hank says. “For this Rosie to take such a solid, confident guy like you and turn him into a rambling mess…maybe meeting her was fate. And I know you’ve lost some of that confidence when things ended with your last girlfriend, but maybe Rosie will help you get back there. All the best people help us find ourselves when we’re feeling lost.”
Hey, I think I want to take a chance on her. I think I want to keep her.
I think I want to love her.
You’re mine, Rosie, and I’m yours. That’s all I need to know. That’s why I’m staring at you.”
“You’re gonna look at him?” Hopeful eyes bounce between mine. “You? Because he knows you. He-he…he loves you.”
“And I love him too. Very much.”
For the first time in a long time, I felt worthy.”
That you might not have ever wanted to be a vet if it weren’t for your dad, or for the way your parents raised you, gave you this incredible, empathetic heart. I couldn’t sit back and watch you put your dream on hold for another year, not after all the work you’ve put into this. I know you didn’t want me to pay for it, Rosie, but giving you this…it’s one of the best things I’ve ever spent my money on.
“Ready to spend your days waiting on a woman, huh?” “If that woman is you? Absolutely.” He drops a kiss to my cheek, soft lips finding my ear, lingering there with his whispered words. “I’m gonna marry you someday, after all. Batman always gets the girl.”
“Am I really your dream?” he whispers against my lips. “Promise?” “Swear it.”
Thank you for letting me into your life, for making me feel like I belonged there.”
