Words, pleas, threats proved equally futile in the no-doubt biological need of the young of the human species to litter their nest. A man of meaner spirit might have considered this an infestation: Brunetti thought of it as one of nature’s ways to prepare a parent’s patience for the future, when the mess would become emotional and moral, not merely physical.

Leon has become very philosophical in this book focusing a lot onrunetti’s inner turmoils. Perhaps she had just become an empty nester herself. I still recall when that happened to my wife and I. We felt truly sad for several weeks. In time we began enjoying a renewed sense of freedom.
I think there is a biological need for all parents to push their young out of the nest, and at the same time to feel badly about it.
