When she ran off and was nearly attacked by that ozziller, all I could see was a red haze of fury. I didn’t need to destroy that monster with as much force as I did, but I wanted to do more than stop it. I wanted it to suffer. For daring to threaten her, I wanted it to feel the excruciating agony of my wrath even after it was dead.
Zerra, I shouldn’t have yelled at her like that, but I can’t control my emotions around her. I’m dangling off a ledge by my fingertips, my grip so close to slipping.
She behaves exactly like a queen. A slightly wild one with a short fuse, but a queen nonetheless. Gods, when she scolds me like that, I want to kiss her. Partly to shut her up, but mostly to feel those lips against mine and bask in that savage anger as I tear off her clothes and fuck her so hard she sees stars.
She smells like every fantasy I’ve ever had. Like the roots growing in the earth and the hearts of blooming roses. Like lightning and smoke and pure untamed flames.
“I don’t know what that bastard did to you, but I’m going to help you get your crown, Heart Queen, and I’m going to make him pay. For all of it.”
We’re both caught in a trance, our breaths the only sounds in the room. But I’ve never felt more at peace than I do right now. I’ve never felt so comfortable in my own body. There’s a disconcerting sense that I’ve found something I’ve lost. Like I’ve come home.
“Lor,” he whispers. His voice is soft, but there’s something as jagged as torn iron buried in that single syllable. He said my name. My actual name and I’ve never loved the sound of it more than I do at this moment. That simple, nothing name that was given to me to keep me as anonymous and unremarkable as possible. Somehow, he makes it sound like it’s a name forged in fire and created for a queen.
“You’re going to ruin me, too, Inmate,” he says softly, making me realize I just said at least part of that out loud. “Lucky for you, we’ll go down in the blaze together.”
