When his jaw ticks, our gazes melt into each other and that same feeling, like I’m being touched from under my skin, resurfaces.
“They’re not your friends, they’re your family.” The three of us all suck in a breath. We’d always kept it a secret, knowing if they ever found one of us out, the other two would be in danger.
These secrets don’t only belong to me.
Another sister might resent me for the luxury I’ve been living in, but not her.
That I dreamed about the Aurora Prince coming to my room and dry humping me with his thigh. That I wanted it. And that I absolutely wanted more. Worst of all, that it left me breathless and wet and aching for it to be real.
“My…our grandmother was the Heart Queen who almost broke the world.”
Any chance of bonding to Atlas was gone the moment Wolf had walked into her life.
“Obviously our mother didn’t know all the details, but she was actually born just before Serce died and grew up deep in the Violet Forest of The Woodlands.
She was the only direct family member left after our grandmother destroyed the entire queendom. It was imperative to our legacy that she survive.”
“Our great-uncle saw she was watched over.” “Cedar,” Nadir breathes. “All this time, he knew?”
A memory ticks as I recall Atlas declaring he and Cedar were friends.
“Eventually, our mother grew up and met another Fae from The Woodlands. They fell in love and he moved to the forest with her, where they gave life to three children.
“When the Heart Queen nearly broke the world, she took the magic of Ouranos with her. For decades, not a single person on the continent could channel even a drop of it.”
“The Primary. Every Artefact denotes a Primary when they ascend a new king or queen. They become the heir when the current ruler either dies or chooses the Evanescence.
The tangled web of secrets we’ve kept for so long hangs between us like either a noose or a lifeline.
Why is she the most breathtaking thing I’ve ever seen?
It should have left her as a shell.
But somehow, she survived both that and Atlas’s Trials and came out on the other end in a blazing ball of confident fire that threatens to burn me up every time she walks into the room.
Partly to shut her up, but mostly to feel those lips against mine and bask in that savage anger as I tear off her clothes and fuck her so hard she sees stars.
She smells like every fantasy I’ve ever had. Like the roots growing in the earth and the hearts of blooming roses. Like lightning and smoke and pure untamed flames.
“I don’t know what that bastard did to you, but I’m going to help you get your crown, Heart Queen, and I’m going to make him pay. For all of it.”
There is so much written in the way they move I can’t believe I’ve never realized how tied to his emotions those lights are.
There’s conflict in them. And a desire so visceral, my core melts into liquid heat.
“I feel it every time you’re in the room. You make me so fucking hard I can’t think
straight. I’ve jerked off in the shower every day, thinking about you. Thinking about how much you hate me.”
“Say yes,” he says. “One night. One long, endless night where I promise you more pleasure than you ever thought possible.”
I want her like I want air and the magic that flows in my veins. Why is her draw so powerful?
“I am your worst nightmare, Inmate. But right now, I’m going to make you come so hard, you’re not going to care.”
“Lucky for you, we’ll go down in the blaze together.”
