Von Neumann’s first solo paper, “On the Introduction of Trans-finite Numbers,” was published in 1923, when he was nineteen. The question of how to consistently distinguish different kinds of infinity, which von Neumann clarified but did not answer, is closely related to Ulam’s question: Which kind of infinity do we want?
