We hate people who, though very important to us, do not love us and refuse to become our cooperative partners despite our best efforts to win their affection. This stirs up in us all the bitter pains, sufferings, and anxieties of the past and we defend ourselves against their return by the barrier of hatred, by denying our need for those people and our dependence upon them.
