Strindberg seemed extremely interested in monkeys at that time. He had a theory that the gorilla was descended from a shipwrecked sailor and an ordinary female monkey. One of his great proofs of this was the similarity between the inside of the paw of a gorilla and the palm of the hand of an old sailor. He showed photos of both, and indeed there was a great resemblance.
