The New World Europeans also began to perceive themselves as a different kind of master. English, Scottish, German, French, and Dutch settlers were uniting under the general label “white.” W.E.B. Du Bois observed that “the discovery of personal whiteness among the world’s peoples is a very modern thing.”19
