There seems to be no place here for the richer concept of human nature in which men are driven by, and often torn between, diverse passions of which “avarice” was only one. Smith was of course fully aware of these other passions and had indeed devoted an important treatise to them. But it is precisely in The Theory of Moral Sentiments that he paves the way for collapsing these other passions into the drive for the “augmentation of fortune.”
