The true joy of life is being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one … being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown to the scrap heap … being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish clod of ailments and grievances.

The golden rule of relationships is “Cause no indignity.” A loving relationship is one in which both partners take care to protect each other’s dignity. A wounded soul heals more slowly than a wounded body, so it is as important to avoid indignity as it is to avoid outright harm.”

Emerson was right: The proper goal was provocation, not instruction. People could like or dislike the photos; they could like or dislike him. Either way, they would be face to face with dignity, and the anguish of its absence.

“Terrorism is a tactic used by the weak to protest chronic indignity.”

At bottom, dignity means belonging, membership, a secure place in the “tribe.” Quite simply, dignity means “in”; indignity “out.” Psychologically, dignity means inclusion and recognition. Socially, it means equal opportunity to contribute. Materially, dignity means having the essentials required to pursue happiness—health, education, income sufficient to live securely, and a voice in governance.

Unfairness is experienced as indignity and indignity breeds indignation.

People want dignity for themselves more than they want to humiliate their oppressors. In this proposition lies hope for humanity.
