“The man who sold the birds to me told me that they represent love and devotion. Which is why I got them for you, because I wanted to show you how I feel about you—because I needed you to know. I’m in love with you, Cassidy. I’ve been falling for a while now and it’s not because of the contract or the sex. It’s because I couldn’t not fall in love with you. You’re beautiful and kind and caring and talented.” I brush the tip of my nose against hers. “I love everything about you.” “Even my singing?” “Even your God-awful singing.”
“Maybe we’re destined to be together. Who knows? But I’d like to think that I’d choose you regardless of fate or some divine intervention. In any version of how this played out, I would’ve fallen in love with you because you’re the woman of my dreams. You’re the person I’ve been hoping to find. Everything feels right with you.”
2-1. Eat shit, Petroski.
“Stop yelling at me and come snuggle me, woman.”
“He was just trying to get a reaction out of you. Next time someone makes a comment about me, don’t fight them, okay? It’s not worth it.” He lifts my chin. “You’re worth everything.”
“It’s the same thing I saw in your eyes last night when I took Petroski’s stick to the face.” He leans down and presses his lips to my forehead. “It’s the kind of loyalty you feel when someone hurts the person you love. The kind where you’ll do anything in your power to protect them.” He brings his lips to mine. “It’s loving someone so fiercely and hoping it’s enough to glue together all the broken pieces of their past.”
Who speaks to his daughter that way? Who speaks to my girl that way?
He picks up his duffle on the way out, and he closes the door with a quiet snick behind him. I almost wish he’d slammed it.
“This is our contract.” “Rip it up, and we can start over.” His Adam’s apple bobs as he swallows. “I don’t want us to be bound by some deal. I don’t want you to make love to me because you need material for your next book. I don’t want you to feel obligated to be with me. And I don’t want you to think for one second that everything I do isn’t for your happiness. I live and breathe for you, Cassidy.”
“And I didn’t even need tequila to get you to take your top off.”
“And I could change the will at any time, right? Like, if I get married and have children one day, I could change who the money goes to?” Trenton arches a brow. “Only if the man you marry is me.” Butterflies explode in my stomach. “You think you’ll want to marry me some day, Trenton Ward?” “I know I do.”
“I’d put a baby in you so fast. You just say the word.” I cough out an incredulous laugh. “You’re not kidding.” “Not one bit.” He picks up his sandwich and mutters into it before taking a huge bite. “Let’s just hope they don’t get your horrible singing gene.” I kick him in the shin under the table.
