He was ravenous. For food, for warmth, for home. For safety.
He only knew that he felt most alive when she was near, and he stood before the doors and watched her walk to him. He sought to read every line of her expression, every thought flickering through her mind, as if she were a story on a page. He was desperate to know what she was thinking, what he could say to convince her to stay. Stay, Iris. Stay here with me.
The recognition tore through him like a bullet, and Roman knew he was awake and lucid, even as he stood face-to-face with a dream.
“Your words only drew me to you.”
Their souls weren’t mirrors but complements, constellations that burned side by side.
“My wife!” Roman hissed. “My wife is in that crowd!”
Words that had spanned kilometers and distance, grief and joy, pain and love. Words that had made her drop her armor after years of clutching it close.
“Did you think that I would let him steal this last moment from me? When I would surrender only to you, take you in my hands, and burn with you before the end comes?”
“Write me a story where there is no ending, Kitt. Write to me and fill my empty spaces.”
