“We’ve needed to upgrade our chairs for ages. The previous ones were aesthetically pleasing, but as you know, they were torture devices. I’m a hundred-percent sure the comfort of the assistants on the executive floor had never been a concern of Elliot’s…until you.” I didn’t believe Elliot replaced all the assistants’ chairs just so I could have a new one. It didn’t make any sense. If he had…that would have been an incredibly kind gesture.
I was starved for attention. That had to be why receiving this intensity from Elliot was so heady. I could have eaten it with a spoon. My chest heaved like I was in a bodice ripper. I dug my fingers into the arms of my chair, so I wasn’t tempted to lay my hand on top of his. That the idea of weaving my fingers between Elliot’s made my toes curl inside my shoes said a lot about my emotional state. Elliot Levy, my intolerable boss.
It dawned on me how incredibly intimate this was. Elliot kneeling at my feet, touching me in a way I hadn’t been touched…maybe ever, with reverence and wonderment…it was difficult not to let it affect me.
Catherine, Something useful to go along with the luxury. The spa card doesn’t expire. Use it when you have the time, even if it’s three years from now. Congratulations on your impending arrival. I should have said that sooner. -Elliot
I really disliked failing, even at gift giving. I was actually ashamed I’d messed up so spectacularly. It was lucky for me Catherine had laid out exactly what she’d wanted. At least I’d gotten it right on the second try.
Just so you understand how vital you are to me as my assistant, I’m running ten minutes late for a meeting because I chose to write you an email instead of getting in the car waiting for me downstairs. You never would have let that happen.
In the car, I should have been reading the designer’s notes for the meeting I was headed to. Instead, I refreshed my inbox thirty times. On the thirty-first, Catherine’s response arrived.
Grinning, I scheduled flowers to be delivered to Catherine’s house for after she arrived home, along with a gift card to an online store that had everything since she hadn’t answered me with what she needed. I could have waited for Daniel to do it tomorrow, but it felt like something I had to do myself. Besides, I had time during the ride, so why not make good use of it? Efficiency.
P.S. I hope both sides of your pillow are always warm. That was cruel. What could I have done that day to deserve such a terrible thing wished upon me?
Babies weren’t my thing. I’d never paid attention to them before now. But this one struck me as exceptionally pretty and sweet.
“You’re good at holding babies. Have you been around many?” “This is my first one.” He dragged his fingertip along her cheek. “I did some reading on the subject.”
“You have to take better care of yourself, Catherine,” he admonished softly, ripping the Band-Aid off in one swift motion. “I know.” I rubbed my palm along my thigh. “It’s been rough lately.” “It doesn’t have to be anymore.”
don’t hold a grudge, Elliot. You hurt my feelings then, but you’ve more than made up for it.” “Maybe I have, but in my experience, saying the words when I’m in the wrong is important to getting right with each other.” “Well then, we’re right with each other.”
