“It’s you and me, love. Us against the world.” We’d make it. There was no other choice.
“She’s been hearing my voice all this time,” he murmured. “Yep. I’d say she’s formed an opinion of you.” My fingers twitched again, this time with the need to run them through his thick, dark hair and ruffle it up a little.
In the car, I should have been reading the designer’s notes for the meeting I was headed to. Instead, I refreshed my inbox thirty times. On the thirty-first, Catherine’s response arrived.
“Hello, Precious Angel McChunk-Cheeks.”
My little prim and pressed Catherine Warner was an undercover firecracker. I’d always known it, but seeing the undeniable proof was wholly gratifying.
“You can’t live here, Catherine.” I tipped my head to the side. “Come with me.” Her mouth fell open. “What?” “I don’t know why your home is in this condition, and I won’t ask you to tell me, but I can’t leave you here. I have a big house with several spare rooms. Plenty of space for you and Josephine. Come now.” “To your house?” she repeated flatly. “Yes. To my house. You can stay as long as you need.”
Babies weren’t my thing. I’d never paid attention to them before now. But this one struck me as exceptionally pretty and sweet.
P.S. Tell Josephine good morning for me.
Awareness of our proximity made my breath quicken. His warm, broad hands cupping my elbows and the intensity of his gaze tracing over my features set alight long-cooled embers in my belly.
“Do you want me to hug you?” “Yes, please.” She curled her arms around my middle. Mine circled around her shoulders, pulling her close. She molded against me, pressing her cheek over my thudding heart.
Raymond raised his hands. “Okay, I get it. You hired the top of the line for our angel. I forgive you for not asking me if I wanted the job.”
“Can I hug you?” I asked. “If you feel like you have to.” He opened his arms wide. “Make it quick.”
“Hug,” he softly demanded. “Okay.” I circled my arms around him, my stress from the last twenty-four hours slipping as his heart thumped under my cheek. And then, there was a light pressure on the top of my head that disappeared as quickly as it had come. I must have been mistaken, but I swore it felt like Elliot had kissed my head.
Her presence was relaxing and calm, soothing and bright.
She wasn’t a ray of sunshine, more like a cool breeze on a scorching day.
Catherine had no idea what she’d awakened when she’d touched her lips to mine.
There was no going back. My stomach was filled with flames, and I was burning for her.
I’m the boss. If I want to kiss my assistant instead of showing up at the office on time, I will, and no one can tell me otherwise.”
“Put on your pajamas, sweetheart. We’re having a sleepover.”
Miles closed his notebook and spread his arms over the back of my raggedy couch. “I’m here because I’m really good at solving other people’s problems and ignoring mine.”
“This love I have for you is etched in my bones and has been growing since the moment I spotted you.
You are threaded through the tapestry of who I am.
“Hug.”
Kisses like touching down on the moon. Like javelin throws. Long jumps. The landing was what mattered.
