The “way of the heart” is a term that has often been used for Christian mysticism in its purest sense, and it’s a good one. The heart is, as anatomists can confirm, a “thinking organ.” Neurologically speaking, it is directly connected to the brain, and so we can say that it has always been an appropriate symbol for the very center of our consciousness. In the mystical practice of the Christian East, contemplative discipline has long been referred to as “the bringing of the mind into the heart” and accompanied with a bodily posture conducive to this end — a deliberate focus on one’s core.
