lowest gears use the small chainring. The cogs on the rear wheel work in just the opposite way. The bigger the gear, the easier it is to turn the pedals, and the smaller the gear, the harder it is to turn them.
It’s best not to use the big chainring with the largest cog on the back wheel, the one closest to the spokes. Nor should you combine the small chainring with the smallest cog on the rear wheel, the one farthest from the spokes.
