Bertillon, Alphonse /ˈbərtlˌän, ˌbertēˈyôN/ (1853–1914), French criminologist. He devised a system of body measurements (the Bertillon system) for the identification of criminals, which was widely used until superseded by the technique of fingerprinting at the beginning of the 20th century.
