I’ve always thought it important to believe in something, because it gives you peace of mind. But horrific events fill me with doubts and questions about the existence of God. When things happen like the terrorist attacks of 11 September in New York, 11 March 2004 in Madrid and 7 July 2005 in London, and the massacres and hunger in Africa, you wonder if God really exists or, as Pope Ratzinger asked when he visited Auschwitz, ‘Where was He?’ Why didn’t He intervene to avoid humanity suffering so much sorrow?
