. A great deal of this book is about ideas-made-visible, on the one hand, and scripture-made-real on the other.
I tell that story because our world today, in the West at least, has become like that BBC employee: paranoid about any actual claims, not only that we might have the truth but that someone else might not.
They long for justice, as all who have been deeply wronged long for it; this is not petty or spiteful vengeance, but the heartaching desire to see the world brought back into balance at last, and their own harsh verdict and sentence being shown up as unjust.
God had raised Jesus from the dead, after his condemnation as a false Messiah. God had reversed the verdict of the human court! He had done the unthinkable, and had demonstrated Jesus to be Messiah after all!
The jewels which Babylon wore, like the golden earrings out of which Aaron made the calf, are tawdry and worthless beside the precious stones with which the city’s foundations are decorated (verses 19–21).
Human sin has meant that God’s eventual design has had to be arrived at by a long, winding and often tear-stained and blood-spattered route, the most important tears and blood being those of God himself, in the person of the lamb.
