Tagore's own idyllic nature caused him to spurn traditional schooling methods, preferring to wander around nearby towns and learn from experience. The dismal conditions of the towns caused a lasting impression on the boy. He would frequently reminisce on his memories in order to write about the abject poverty that the people of Calcutta lived in every day.

Tagore began writing poetry at the age of eight. By his sixteenth year, he had accumulated a large amount of works. He produced his first recognized work "Sun Lion" under the pseudonym BhnusiCha. The long poem followed a specific form developed by a Medieval Sanskrit poet that most considered a lost art; the poem is written in one Sanskrit language, but the letters are drawn in a style similar to another. After working on his poetry at Dalhousie, Tagore enrolled one of England's public schools in 1878 at the age of 17. He initially moved to the country to study law, but he quit school in order to pursue learning about the major literary works of the Western world, including books written by scientific-minded Thomas Brown and English playwright William Shakespeare. This time in Tagore's life was crucial to his reinvention of the theories about modernizing Bengali art. In 1901, Tagore and his family moved to the small, seven-acre mountain town of Santiniketan. While many wondered why Tagore moved away from the city to the extreme rural countryside, the Brahmin had an inspired plan in mind for the region. He ordered the building of a marble-floored prayer hall and called it The Mandir. He also built a school and a library surrounded by groves of trees and beautiful gardens. He called the school Patha Bhavana and taught on the premise that learning would be more rewarding if it was done in a natural environment.

In 1912, Tagore travelled to Europe and America on tour. His translated writings impressed authors of high caliber such as William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, and art critic William Rothenstein. Even more importantly, his English works caught the eyes of the Swiss Academy. In November 1913, Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his poetry collection entitled Gitanjali. The poems followed the same themes as his long poem "Sun Lion;" they saw the union of two lovers in both a physical, spiritual, and natural sense.

We write long books where no page perhaps has any quality to make writing a pleasure, being confident in some general design, just as we fight and make money and fill our heads with politics—all dull things in the doing—while Mr. Tagore, like the Indian civilization itself, has been content to discover the soul and surrender himself to its spontaneity.

An innocence, a simplicity that one does not find elsewhere in literature makes the birds and the leaves seem as near to him as they are near to children, and the changes of the seasons great events as before our thoughts had arisen between them and us. At times I wonder if he has it from the literature of Bengal or from religion, and at other times, remembering the birds alighting on his brother's hands, I find pleasure in thinking it hereditary, a mystery that was growing through the centuries like the courtesy of a Tristan or a Pelanore.

On the day when the lotus bloomed, alas, my mind was straying, and I knew it not. My basket was empty and the flower remained unheeded. Only now and again a sadness fell upon me, and I started up from my dream and felt a sweet trace of a strange fragrance in the south wind.
