This brings me to the ways in which scientific problems are found and discoveries made. Scientists, mathematicians among them, follow one of two pathways. First, early in the research a problem is identified, and then a solution is sought. The problem may be relatively small (for example, what is the average life span of a Nile crocodile?) or large (what is the role of dark matter in the universe?).
