What started as no more than a sensible precaution against the possibility that battlefield success might prove elusive turned out to be a strategy that precluded the possibility of such a victory. And this in turn begged the question of whether Germany, in fact, had any chance of winning the ‘long war’ for which Thomas and Backe were so urgently preparing. Did the ‘long war’ strategy not play directly into the hands of Britain and France?
