In the light of the severe setback to Germany’s armaments effort in the summer of 1939, fully revealed for the first time in this chapter, these justifications offered by Hitler for his decision to go to war deserve to be taken seriously and not waved aside as mere ‘half-truths’ and ex post facto rationalizations.
