The German economy must be fit for war within four years.   Hitler thus answered the questions posed by Goerdeler and Fromm in a manner entirely consistent with the general position he had adopted since the 1920s. Germany’s ultimate salvation could come only through conquest not trade. And the time-horizon for opening this campaign was four years, fully in line with the army’s expansion plan.
