In August 1914, the young Adolf Hitler had been amongst the ecstatic crowds that thronged the streets of Munich. He could not but have been struck by the starkly different mood that greeted his war in September 1939. There were no cheering mobs, no garlands for the troop trains and with good reason. In military terms Germany was not ready for a confrontation with the Western powers.
