At first, Hitler’s Wehrmacht seemed unstoppable, better prepared and more aggressive than the Kaiser’s armies. But as Hitler charged from victory to victory, his enemies multiplied. For the second time, a German bid to dominate the continent of Europe ran up against overwhelming opposition.
