The increased intake of sugar, and of sugared-alcohol drinks, is likely why so many kings became obese (the “Adipose Rex” syndrome). William the Conqueror, for example, became so fat during his later years that he was accused of looking like a pregnant woman by King Philip of France. He became so angry at this accusation that he stormed the city of Mantes near Paris in 1087, where he set the city on fire.
