Mead was another drink that was developed by fermenting honey with yeast. Mead was developed nearly 8000 years ago, possibly in Crete. Over time it became most popular in northern Europe where grapes were less available for producing wine. Indeed, mead was a popular drink among the Vikings and was considered the drink of the Norse gods. While the fermentation of honey would have likely eliminated much of the fructose, the mead was often supplemented with additional honey or fruit.
