There may be something about emergent phenomena that thus will not allow, even in principle, an explanation at a lower level. There are some forms of emergentism that are anti-physicalist. Some are emergentists about the mind and mental phenomena, for instance. On this view, mind would be non-physical and non-physically explicable. But another form of emergentism would be simply that higher-level physical things are not mere sums of lower-level physical things and not explicable in terms of them.
