He had a logical explanation for his unique appearance. “When I’m in the field,” Custer explained, “I want my men to recognize me.”19

He drew his Toledo blade (emblazoned with the inscription “Draw me not without provocation. Sheathe me not without honor”) and pointed it toward the enemy.

The Rebels proudly made off with the 7th Michigan’s colors, and the wounded officer lay on the field for nearly an hour before the Confederates finally carried him away.

Michigan was not able to reclaim the regiment’s colors until years after the war.
