American soccer leagues have often tried to introduce tiebreakers so that even in regular season league play, games don’t end without a winner. For the first four seasons of Major League Soccer (MLS) play between 1996 and 1999, a shootout was held if the score was tied at the end of regulation time. In this case, the shootouts saw players attempting to score by running in from 35 yards out and trying to beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one contest for five seconds, with each team receiving five efforts each.
