Magnetoencephalography does the same thing, except that the probe used to read the brain’s electromagnetic activity doesn’t even touch the head! This amazingly noninvasive technology, which is used for cognitive research as well as for diagnostic purposes such as locating tumors before surgery, works because the brain generates energy fields outside the head.
