Originally, Newtonian physics held that the atom was the smallest particle of the Universe. In fact, the word atom comes from the Greek uncuttable. However, the year 1895 marked the beginning of a renaissance in physics that would forever change our understanding of the world. It was at this time that physicists began to discover that atoms are made up of even smaller particles. Electrons were discovered first, followed by protons and neutrons.
