this acknowledged difficulty does not necessarily mean that Fermat’s Last Theorem is an important theorem in the ways described earlier. The Last Theorem, at least until very recently, seemed to fail to fulfil several criteria – it seemed that proving it would not lead to anything profound, it would not give any particularly deep insight about numbers, and it would not help prove any other conjectures.
