Awwww :( I know what Staavrogin means to Shatov. He got him back in Europe and lended him money when he most needed it. Stavrogin probably saved his life once. Nikolay's 'degradation' was him marrying Marya, which Shatov guessed, and the 'lie' was giving Lebyadkin the money which he uses to drink instead of giving it to his sister Dasha like he promised (we know from Liputin). And also probably for boinking Dasha, which ruined her chances at the stable marriage she might have gotten.
