Seeing Macnaghten reunited with his wife, Shuja now decided to bring his blind brother, Shah Zaman, and both their harems up from Ludhiana. This was presumably partly because he was missing them, but also because he must have calculated that it was important to move them before the Punjab got any more dangerous, or even closed completely, so cutting him off from his family.
