There is no need to be very sophisticated in temporary engagement. All such grand temporary deeds, although perhaps very important for temporary life, have nothing to do with eternal life. Therefore, sanätana-dharma does not refer to any process of religion. It is the eternal function of the soul in relationship with the Supreme Lord. As liquidity cannot be taken from water, heat cannot be taken from fire. Similarly, the eternal function of the soul to please the Lord is inherent in every living entity.
