The woman has the capricious temper of a tyrant—content one minute and vexed the next.

Mary is now certain that once she crosses the river the Indians will kill her.

That's illogical

the grandmothers and babes always die first, as if the spirits of war wish to strip the people of both their wisdom and their hope.

Instead of examining themselves, the English falsely and foolishly believe that whatever they do is approved by God.
