And be gentle in judging those in need, one rabbi pointed out. “When a poor man asks you for aid, do not use his faults as an excuse for not helping him. For then God will look at your offenses, and he is sure to find many.”18 If we can’t be compassionate to others who’ve made unwise choices, why should we expect God to help us when we make mistakes ourselves?
