Second, Mill argued that unless views are regularly challenged they are likely to be held as dead dogmas. Even if the view expressed is false, the very fact of the orthodox view being challenged forces its holders to clarify and defend their beliefs. The result is that we end up holding beliefs because we understand the arguments in support of them, not just because we are told that they are true.
