Someone who believes that the Bible is the word of God will have no doubt about the meaning of ‘right’ and ‘wrong’: ‘right’ means what God wills, and ‘wrong’ means anything which is against God’s will. For such a believer morality is a matter of following absolute commands given by the external authority, God.
Second, Mill argued that unless views are regularly challenged they are likely to be held as dead dogmas. Even if the view expressed is false, the very fact of the orthodox view being challenged forces its holders to clarify and defend their beliefs. The result is that we end up holding beliefs because we understand the arguments in support of them, not just because we are told that they are true.
