“It is not possible for men to avoid fate, even when they see it beforehand.”
“We must seize every opportunity we can to speak the truth and proclaim peace. Especially now. There’s so little time for so many.”
when one did not serve the Lord, they unwittingly served the evil one instead.
“But so often, things of great beauty are full of great corruption.”
“He touched me and I arose.” God’s power could overcome anything.
We are part of the body of Christ, and in Christ we have eternal life. Nothing can separate us. No power on earth. Not even death.”
‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.’
“Stand firm in the Lord, Hadassah. Stand firm and let him fight your battles. Do not try to fight alone.”
Jesus forgave the thief, but he didn’t take him down off the cross.”
“God always leaves a remnant.”
Her father had said suffering brought endurance in order that one might be strengthened for whatever lay ahead.
“My God has not deserted me, my lord.”
I can’t do anything without his express approval, and I’m sick of it. I wish Drusus were my father. Octavia can do anything she pleases.” “Sometimes that kind of freedom doesn’t come from love, my lady, but lack of care.”
How do you reach people who feel no need or desire for a Savior?
“‘“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
Each person answers for their own actions, and even then, it is God who decides.”
“We’re each single threads woven together in a tapestry God has created. Only he sees the full picture, but not even a sparrow falls without his knowing.”
“God makes all things work to the good,”
Marcus had never heard her laugh before. Looking down into her small, happy face and hearing the sweet sound, he almost cupped her face and kissed her.
The change in her filled him with disturbing warmth. It wasn’t lust; he was all too familiar with that emotion. This was something else. It was something deeper, more mysterious, something that had less to do with his senses than his spirit—or his soul as she would call it. She tugged at his heart.
God, why can’t I cry out the truth from the rooftops? Why don’t I have the courage to speak as my father did? I love these people, but I haven’t the words to reach them. I’m afraid to speak out and say they are wrong and I’m right.
“Hadassah isn’t like the others, Marcus. She’s not like anyone we’ve ever owned before.”
Sometimes he would rise early just to watch her go out at sunrise to pray to her god.
Her love for him was impossible, and yet it was growing each day.
The Lord has smiled on you. Having a child is the greatest blessing God can give a woman.”
“Jesus, Jesus, forgive them for they know not what they do.”
“Give up this faith you have in an unseen god. He isn’t there.” “Can you see air you breathe? Can you see the force that moves the tides or changes the seasons or sends the birds to a winter haven?”
“Jesus is Lord,”
“You have so much yet to learn. Life is like a play, Julia, and we are the writers who create it. Think of this as merely one act . . . one small act with many more to come. . . .”
“We are all God’s children. He loves us equally, whether Jew or Gentile, slave or free. We cannot earn his love; we can only accept it as a gift—a gift that he will give to each one of us.”
“Ours is a struggle to live a godly life in a fleshly world. We must remember we are not called upon by God to make society a better place to live. We are not called upon to gain political influence, nor to preserve the Roman way of life. God has called us to a higher mission, that of bringing to all mankind the Good News that our Redeemer has come . . .”
She prayed for each of them unceasingly.
“Is Rome so afraid of truth she must destroy it?”
“We will see each other again when we’re with the Lord.”
“Please me. Call me ‘Marcus’ the way you did in Claudius’ garden so long ago. Do you remember? Marcus, you said, as though I meant something to you.”
“You told me once you pray for me.” “I always pray for you.”
“God is love,”
“Love is patient, Marcus,” she said softly. “Love is kind. Love doesn’t act unbecomingly or seek its own. It is not provoked, nor does it take into account a wrong suffered. Love doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails . . .”
“Nothing is impossible for God,”
Her religion was full of paradoxes. Her faith defied all logic. Yet she clung to it with a quiet stubbornness that surpassed the devotion of any temple priestess.
“God wounds that he might heal.”
How could someone so gentle, so fragile, be so unbending?
“God spoke in a gentle whisper, Marcus. A still, small voice. A voice in the wind . . .”
“Life is a journey, Atretes, not our final destination.
“I love you,” Marcus said huskily. “I love you so much.”
Religion doesn’t matter to me. It never has. But it matters to you, and because of that, I’ll wait. All that matters to me is that I love you. I want no regrets between us.”
“I believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.”
“Unless we have something worth dying for, Atretes, we’ve nothing worth living for.”
