Religion does not seem at first to have had any connection with morals. Apparently (for we are merely guessing, or echoing Petronius, who echoed Lucretius) “it was fear that first made the gods”25 —fear of hidden forces in the earth, rivers, oceans, trees, winds, and sky. Religion became the propitiatory worship of these forces through offerings, sacrifice, incantation, and prayer. Only when priests used these fears and rituals to support morality and law did religion become a force vital and rival to the state.

I think most people would argue against this, but if you really consider it, and look at the humor of the youth, it echos Camus' views and the Absurdist lines of thoughts. Many would likely argue against this, and say these things mean nothing to them, but I think nihilism and lack of meaning affects many people, especially the younger crowds who have so much access to information, it's almost logical to feel as if nothing matters and why bother considering their short (considering the entire timeline) time on Earth.
