when a literal interpretation would contradict other truths inside or outside the Bible, as when the Bible speaks of the “four corners of the earth” (Revelation 7:1)
I will add that one should not define everything in the bible by the physical senses. The four corners of the earth may not be something we can "see" in the physical realm, but who knows what the earth looks like in the Spiritual realm.
