The term day of the Lord is used in several senses in Scripture. The Old Testament prophets sometimes used it to describe an event to be fulfilled in the near future. At other times, they referred to an event in the distant eschatological future (the future tribulation period). The immediate context of the term generally indicates which sense is intended. In both cases, the day of the Lord is characterized by God supernaturally intervening in order to bring judgment against sin in the world.
