As with many of his rules of the ethics of means and ends, Alinsky equates the need for political change in America to much more dire circumstances in history. Hitler and the American Revolution are examples of boiling points in world history. It is absurd to think that one should use such extreme tactics in situations that clearly do not warrant it.

To the Alinskyite, it is victory at any cost and by any means necessary. To the rest of us, victory is our goal, but the way we achieve that victory is important as well. They may believe the ends justify the means, but we must be better than that. We must work harder, and find ways to beat them at their own game without losing our souls in the process.
