In 1802 Beethoven wrote a famous letter to his brother known as the “Heiligenstadt Manifesto,” named for the town where he wrote it, explaining in florid, sometimes abstruse language that he lived in a state of constant despair and that if it weren’t for his love of music and his passion for life, he would surely kill himself.
