Authorial intent should not be excluded from this process, though it often is: for instance, when dealing with ancient texts we should remember that ancient commentators on rhetoric were perfectly well aware of the varied possible effects of narratives, and we are not bound to regard all the evangelists as ignorant of such ideas.
