I’d read steamy books before—plenty of them. But none had mentioned someone’s voice making me attracted to them.
“Deathjaws wants to know why your stomach growled so quickly after eating,” Bright said. “They starved me in the tower,” I admitted.
“She’s something of a legend among the fae. She fought fiercely alongside us for centuries but always refused to bond with any of us. None of the fae have even heard her speak before, as far as I know. When there are no battles to fight, she disappears, and no one can find her. Two decades ago, she vanished entirely. No one had seen her since then until today.” Well, that took me aback.
“Why? I’d like to be at the top of her list when she decides who to spend the eclipse with.” He winked at me, and my smile grew. He found me attractive, despite the way I’d been starving and imprisoned and everything else. “It’s two and a half months away. I don’t think you need to start now,” Eisley drawled back. “Sure I do. Half the fae in Jirev already want to see what kind of plants Nissa grows when she climaxes.”
As much as I enjoyed staring at it, there was always the chance staring might lead to me doing something I shouldn’t. Like licking it. Or somehow managing to fall on top of it.
“Does a fire hurt by merely existing?”
“I’m telling you that you can’t hurt anyone by existing, little human. If someone is hurt by opinions that don’t belong to them, they are responsible for their own perceived pain.”
Fae do not live our lives with an intent to please anyone; we simply exist. No one is responsible for someone else’s peace of mind.”
“The color doesn’t bother me, though I’d prefer you wear nothing at all.”
“You don’t ever need to ask to give me pleasure. The answer is always yes.”
“She belongs at my side, as I belong at hers. Our souls were meant to be one. The fact that our bonded companions are in the same position is merely a push from someone on the other side of the veil.”
“So you want me to believe that my human and I are merely side characters in your love story?” I asked. “Of course. And the fact that you just called her yours only emphasizes my point.”
There was fierce pleasure in providing something for my mate that no one else could. Fiercer than the thrill of any battle won or enemy defeated. Perhaps the fiercest joy I had ever felt. I held her tight and didn’t plan to let go until she forced me to.
“I would prefer you risk everyone’s lives before yours,” he said.
“I’ve hardly thought of anything else since,” he growled. “Having you beside me constantly is the only thing that’s kept me from stroking myself to the memory of it day in and day out.”
“The way it sounded on your lips was too perfect for me to ask you to shorten it.”
If we didn’t have a future, what was I doing there at all? I couldn’t watch him mate with another woman and just be friends with him after everything we’d done and been through.
I’m sorry,” he said, his voice low and honest. “I’m sorry, Nissa. When I first took you from your town, I did use you for your magic, and I am sorry for that. But I’m not your mother. I revel in the fire burning in your chest and the way you argue with me, as I always have. I care about your comfort, your health, and your happiness—and I have never tried to use you for sex, as you know well.”
His eyes gleamed wickedly. “If you wanted to end her, I would hold her down for you.” I laughed. “How romantic.”
“Do not discount your own struggles because they sound less vicious than someone else’s.
They can look at you and envy me as much as they’d like, so long as they remember that I’m the only one who gets to taste you, fill you, and make you scream.” My body trembled as I bit back a cry of pleasure. “You’re obsessed.” “Entirely.”
“I know that we’re fated. I can feel it in my chest, my magic, and my very soul.”
Instead, he said, “I see many things when I look at you, Nissa. The one that truly stands out is hope. You make my world look brighter, and I need that.”
It was everything. He was everything.
“Use me for your pleasure, little human. I belong to you.”
She was dying. My mate was dying. Nissa was dying.
“My fiery little human,” I murmured into her mind, stroking her hair lightly as I turned so my back met the tree behind us for support. “Our months together have been the best of my life. I love you more than I could
