The basic idea behind The Four Agreements is that we suffer in our lives because we subscribe to self-limiting beliefs in our minds. Only by replacing these beliefs with more positive ones suggested by The Four Agreements can we achieve true happiness and freedom from suffering.
The Mastery of Awareness: With this mastery, we become aware of who we truly are so that we can also accept all the possibilities that this brings. The Mastery of Transformation: In this mastery, we learn to change and become free from negative beliefs. The Mastery of Intent: This mastery is about our intention to change our lives. Intent also represents unconditional love because this is the love that we show ourselves. Therefore, the Mastery of Intent can also be known as The Mastery of Love.
The first step in the transformation is to examine what we believe, so that we will know just what we need to change in ourselves. We need to focus our attention on the things that we need to change. The next step is to become aware of the self-limiting beliefs that are making you unhappy. Once you take an inventory of these beliefs, you can begin the process of transformation.
The Fifth Agreement is: Be Skeptical but Learn to Listen. What this agreement means is that we should always be questioning everything. You should always view everything that you hear with doubt in order to get at the truth.
Another mistake that we make in relationships is basing our happiness on our partner. When we rely on other people to make us happy, we are sure to be disappointed.
